I think one of my father’s cousins had put a nineties Toyota 2.4 Diesel engine out of a Hilux in his Lada Riva Estate after the original engine let go. He was pretty proud of his feat and really happy about all the N.m he had at his disposal...

Yeah, I’ve thought about a small diesel a bit, but there really aren’t many to choose from in North America. In my mind the swap looses its cool factor a bit when every other diesel swap uses the same engine.
The Niva’s engine is still running alright, just pulled it to change the oil pan. But I’ve always kinda dreamed of shoehorning a Jeep 4.0 into the Niva, and given I had one sitting around, I figured it would be a good opportunity for a test fit. But the big straight-six, when lined up with Niva’s bellhousing, leaves the crank pulley chilling over the front bumper. More planning is needed to make it work...

Not entirely sure how it works. There’s been a few posts out where you comment asking to get authorship. I found one through Google a couple years back... ¯\_()_/¯

Like the other guy said, just comment on the authorship post. The post says you have to have a good commenting history though.

Oooh that’s nice.
May need some cutting and welding but doesn’t sound impossible.
Plus the Riva an all the other cars that share its platform (or are very similar) are popular and abundant enough to have access to a lot of info

What new engine are you putting in?

Damn, I feel like a fool. I never realized it was a Niva and not a Riva, thus the platform-sharing nonsense...
Shame on me. This is even better though, the Niva is a kickass offroader

The Niva’s old lump will be going back in. Just pulled it to change the oil pan, cause it seemed easier than blowing the entire suspension apart to come up from underneath.
The other engine’s a Jeep 4.0, came out of my MJ last summer. I’ve always kinda wanted to put one in the Niva, but considering its longer than the engine bay, it’s gonna take a lot more work than I hoped.

Yeah, because it’s a Niva it brings a few more challenges. The biggest is going to be finding a transmission that’ll fit in the wheelbase and allow me to keep it 4x4. Last summer I parked the Niva between the complete Jeep power train, and with the AW4 and 231 as they are in the MJ, I’d have the serp belt right against the grill and only about a foot of rear driveshaft, so that’s not going to work, having just over 7' of drivetrain in an 82" wheelbase. I’d also need to upgrade axles and everything else, which adds even more complexity given the IFS. Making the engine fit is a big hurdle, but not necessarily the biggest.
